Thirty years ago I suffered regular bouts of back and neck pain characterized by muscle spasms that made sitting or moving uncomfortable at best. I tried numerous treatments that all worked to some degree to relieve my symptoms, but no treatment I tried reduced the frequency of the occurrences. My parents both had back surgery to relieve their back problems, so I feared that my condition was hereditary and I would have to learn to live with it. When a friend told me about the Alexander Technique, I was very skeptical but I was willing to give it a try.
My Alexander Technique teacher showed me that the ways I was standing, sitting and moving were harming me, and more importantly, that I could do something about these habits. Despite my continuing wariness, I felt I had to put this novel approach to the test. After just a few lessons, the benefits were undeniable. The frequency of painful episodes steadily declined and eventually I learned how to permanently maintain a pain-free state. I have not suffered pain in several years now. Needless to say, I am more than satisfied with the returns on my investment!
